FAQs about UV Printers

What is a UV printer?

A UV printer, also called a UV flatbed printer, is a digital printer that uses ultraviolet light to cure UV ink directly on solid, rigid, or curved items. You can use a UV printer to print on wood, acrylic, metal, glass, canvas, leather, plastic, stone, and more without extra transfer steps.

Depending on the application, there are several types of UV printers. For example, a rotary UV printer for tumblers is designed for cylindrical items, while a roll-to-roll UV printer for long-format printing is made for longer print jobs. A UV DTF printer for stickers prints designs onto transfer film for application to different surfaces.

What can a UV printer do?

With a UV printer, you can print on both rigid and soft materials. With white ink, you can print on dark and clear surfaces. Our eufyMake UV printer can even create 3D textures that you can feel by touch.

To put it into practice, you can make UV DTF stickers, custom phone cases, wall art, mugs, and golf balls.

What is the difference between a UV printer and a UV DTF printer?

A UV printer works by printing directly on a flat or slightly curved surface. On the other hand, a UV DTF printer first prints your design onto a special film, then transfers it to the object. So, UV DTF is better for uneven or round objects such as bottles, while a regular UV printer works best for signs, packaging, and boards.

Does a UV printer need ink?

Yes. A UV printer needs specially formulated UV-curable ink. UV ink contains photoinitiators that react when exposed to ultraviolet light, causing the ink to cure and harden under UV light.

You should not use regular inkjet printer ink or ink designed for another printing method, such as DTF ink, in a UV printer. Incompatible ink can cause printing problems, including printhead clogging.

UV printers use different ink configurations depending on the model. The eufyMake E1 uses six ink channels for CMYK, white, and gloss ink, plus a separate cleaning cartridge. All required ink channels should be kept available during use. Running a required ink channel empty can affect printing and may damage the printer.

How to choose a UV printer?

If you're considering buying a UV printer but aren't sure which one to choose, you can look for these factors: your budget, print bed size, print speed, printer size, software, and maintenance. You can find more details in our dedicated guide on how to choose a UV printer.

We recommend eufyMake E1, our best UV printer for beginners and home use. It can print up to A3 size while taking up relatively little workspace. With bidirectional printing and a self-cleaning feature, it can also be one of the fastest desktop UV printers in its price range while making routine maintenance easier.

What are the disadvantages of UV printers?

UV printing is very versatile, but like any technology, it has a few downsides. The ink isn’t very flexible, so prints on soft or stretchy fabrics can crack over time. White ink runs out faster and needs constant circulation to prevent clogging. Large format UV printers can also be expensive compared to other methods.
Luckily, eufyMake offers solutions: flexible white ink for fabrics and tricky surfaces, a self-cleaning system to keep your printer running smoothly, and affordable UV printer that make it easy to bring your creative ideas to life.
